By Guste Jan 07, 2021

Our Meet the Team blog series highlights the amazing people behind Moixa. A big thank you to Charlotte, a Front-end Designer & Developer, who sat down with us to talk about Moixa, her role and the projects she is currently working on.

Charlotte ZhangCharlotte Zhang, Senior Front-end Designer & Developer

Charlotte has been with Moixa for a year and a half and designs and develops the UI/UX for Moixa’s apps and tools.

She holds a degree in Computer Science and did her postgraduate in Design Informatics where she picked up her design related knowledge and front-end programming skills. Prior to joining Moixa, Charlotte worked in China where she was a developer whilst working part-time doing design projects. She started her creative career in the UK working at an international ad agency and then joined Moixa in her current role.

How did you first hear about Moixa?

I was looking for a job that allowed me to do both design and programming at the same time, Moixa popped up and was hiring for a role that fitted me perfectly.

What made you want to take the role?

I’ve always been interested in the Internet of Things. My postgraduate final dissertation was about it, so this role was a perfect fit, it allowed me to continue to improve my skillset whilst letting me work on a topic I loved. Also, at some point, I’d love to apply my knowledge in Human-Computer Interaction in order to communicate the advanced technology of GridShare to users and therefore contribute to the world.

What elements of Moixa and our business are you most passionate about? Is it the people, the technology, the software, the customers…?

One of my personal goals is to build things that are useful and good looking. At Moixa, we are implementing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to optimise electricity and build a future powered by renewable energy. Being one of the people who then creates beautiful interfaces as the medium that showcases that powerful functionality to end-users makes me feel like I am successfully working towards my personal goal.
Of course, the people at Moixa also make me happy. I really enjoy working with them and having fun with them after work.

What happens on your typical workday?

My day usually starts with reviewing my previous work and picking back up from where I left it. Followed by a standup meeting with my team to share what tasks we are planning to do for the day. Then, the rest of the day is split into UX prototyping, high fidelity design, user interface coding and meetings with other stakeholders.

Are you currently working on any particularly interesting projects? What excites you about it?

I currently work on two projects, one is around flex and the other is around Electric Vehicle Charging management. I’m excited to showcase through the UI, how our GridShare Software can help improve EV charging and flexibility.

What has been your proudest moment since joining Moixa?
Moixa Dashboard and app

I just finished a big piece of work focused on redesigning the Moixa customer-facing app and dashboard (web app). Through this project, I was able to improve the UX and visual style of the apps and I was thrilled to see positive user feedback about how they loved the updated visual elements and the way the data was displayed. I really hope users find the data visualisation clearer and more useful now and they enjoy using it every day.

What are the key skills you need to be successful in your role?

My role is quite special as it is a combination of visual and programming skills. I need to be highly proficient in design tools like Adobe Creative Suite and Sketch whilst also being strong in front-end language, like JavaScript.

Communication skills are also key as we talk to many stakeholders and end-users to understand their feedback and make improvements to the apps.

What is the most interesting thing you have learnt whilst working at Moixa?

My colleagues in different departments who specialise in all different non-design areas make some amazing artwork and are really passionate about it!

If you had a magic wand, what change would you make to the energy industry?

I hope the industry can have 100% efficiency in generating, storing and delivering energy. No more waste, not more margins.

What steps are you personally taking towards a cleaner future?

I became a Minimalist 5 years ago. During this time, by avoiding compulsive shopping I significantly reduced how many new clothes and belongings I bought. I will also donate items to the charity shop that do not fit anymore or I’ll DIY them into something else.

What is one great piece of career advice you have been given?

Start learning whatever skill you are interested in. I believe enough practice will eventually help you to master it.

What are your top tips for someone who wants to work at Moixa or in the renewable energy industry?

Keep learning and asking questions, people are really friendly and are willing to help you. After all, we are all pursuing the same goal – a clean future!
