Our Meet the Team blog series highlights the amazing people behind Moixa. A big thank you to Shane, our Operations Delivery Manager, who sat down with us to talk about Moixa, his role and his passion for sustainable technology.

Meet the Team: Shane Kelly, Operations Delivery Manager

Shane has been working for Moixa for about six months as an Operations Delivery Manager. His role focuses on integrating new smart energy storage projects into business as usual in order to support the company’s role in the renewable energy transition.

Before joining Moixa, Shane worked as a project manager to install solar PV and battery storage systems, building up significant experience in the energy sector.

Shane holds a BSc degree in Engineering – where his studies focused on designing for a sustainable future – and he is currently attending a Masters (MSc) in Technology Management.

What made you want to take the job at Moixa?

When looking for a new role, I was keen to work for a company at the forefront of renewable technology and implementing solutions to the climate crisis.

What elements of Moixa and our business are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about sustainable technology, so I’m really happy to be able to work at a company whose products are at the vanguard of this. Part of my role involves acting as a bridge between clients and the company, and I love being able to play an active part in making sure the products are doing what the clients want them to.

What happens on a typical workday for you?

I wouldn’t say I have a typical workday, but much of my time is spent working with clients and team members, developing ways to make systems more efficient.

Are you currently working on any exciting projects?

I’m currently working on enabling the roll-out of our products and services to customers of a major electricity supplier. It involves integrating complex systems and coordinating with many different parties, which I love.

What is the most interesting/surprising thing you have learnt whilst working at Moixa?

How much of the cost of our energy bills comes from distributing energy from generation sites to homes and businesses. And how capable of supporting decentralised assets the National Grid is.

Read about how Moixa supported the National Grid by partnering with UK Power Networks to unlock flexibility at a domestic level.

What are the key skills you need to be successful in your role?

The critical skills for my role are being a good systems thinker and project manager.

What steps are you individually making towards a cleaner future?

For me, a big part is choosing where I spend my money as I think it’s the best way to impact the companies and organisations that contribute the most to the climate crisis. I boycott companies who are big polluters, choosing to shop with companies that offer (genuinely) sustainable products. I also do a zero-waste weekly food shop, eat a vegan diet and buy second hand where possible.

What change would you make to the energy industry if you had a magic wand?

I’d love to change the rhetoric around energy. Calling money spent on oil and gas ‘investment’ and money spent on renewable energy sources ‘subsidies’ is the biggest one that jumps out but there are a plethora of other examples.

What is the one thing we should know about you that isn’t on your CV or LinkedIn Profile?

Cardigans and biscuits are my real hobbies 🙂

What is one great piece of career advice you have been given?

“Sometimes the questions are complicated, and the answers are simple.” (Dr Seuss)

What are your top tips for someone who wants to work at Moixa or in the renewable energy industry?

It’s a fascinating industry, and there is no way to know everything, but if you enjoy learning about the industry, you’ll do well.
