Moixa’s highlights of 2021: what we’re most proud of

By Mara Dec 20, 2021

At Moixa, we are committed to delivering a more sustainable world. Our team works hard every day to help build the energy system of the future, and we are so proud of all the achievements born out of their hard work and commitment to excellence.
Without them, Moixa could not have achieved everything we did this year, from driving innovation in projects we are passionate about to delivering unparalleled results for our amazing clients and customers.

As we are approaching the end of the year, we have taken the time to reflect on the challenges and successes of 2021. While our team accomplished great things every day, we want to share a few of the standout moments we are most proud of.

Our partnership with ITOCHU to decarbonise Japan’s power market

In 2018, ITOCHU, a leading Japanese trading house with business interests and holdings worldwide, partnered with us to deploy their Smart Star ESS to customers in tandem with Moixa’s GridShare software. The partnership aimed at supporting Japan’s green transition, providing value to ITOCHU’s customers whilst decarbonising the country’s grid.

This year, by leveraging Moixa’s technology, we are proud to announce that ITOCHU has been able to deploy arguably the largest connected battery fleet globally, reaching the milestone of 30,000 residential batteries connected to Moixa’s GridShare platform. This result is pivotal for decarbonising Japan’s power market to meet climate goals and shows that flexibility services from distributed assets will play a key role in grid management once these markets develop further.

Enabling a greener grid and customer engagement with flexibility contracts

At the forefront of technological innovation, Moixa is also involved in several projects to support National Grid by providing grid services to local electricity networks from distributed energy storage assets.

For instance, throughout 2021, Moixa has been actively working with UK Power Networks (UKPN) to provide flexibility services to the local grid in a few different constraint areas across the UK, such as in Lewes, East Sussex, and in the area across Worthing and Littlehampton.

The virtual power plant (VPP) of aggregated home batteries within the area of Lewes managed to successfully deliver 50kW, meeting the contract’s requirements and leading to us being shortlisted alongside our partner UK Power Networks for the Utility Week Collaborative Excellence Award 2021. More information can be found in our case study.

The flexibility contract in the Worthing and Littlehampton area started in December 2021, and the results have been positive so far, with the first six dispatches being completed successfully. The VPP of Moixa optimised batteries has managed to support the area’s energy demand and exported power in response to grid constraints. This has also enabled our customers to play an active role in the local energy market.

Launch of e:PROGRESS in partnership with Honda

Since 2019, Moixa has also worked closely with Honda, a Japan-based multinational automobile company, to accelerate its electrification plans in the UK and Europe.

This partnership has successfully supported Honda in creating additional value for EV customers and power system operators. We are thrilled to report that in April 2021, Honda launched e:PROGRESS, an intelligent home EV charging offer for Honda e customers in the UK, bringing them financial benefits while also helping balance the increase in energy demand from the grid.

By using Moixa’s GridShare technology, e:PROGRESS enables UK customers to benefit from the lowest-cost electricity prices whilst also optimising the use of electricity from renewable sources by integrating with the Agile Octopus or Octopus Go 100% renewable tariffs from Octopus Energy.

We are looking forward to supporting Honda to further expand e:PROGRESS proposition in other countries, progressing further towards a net zero world.

Moixa Dashboard: new features for our customers

At Moixa, we want to bring customers along on the green journey with us, making sure that they are engaged and informed about our products and their potential benefits for the energy system as a whole.

That’s why, throughout the year, we have developed a set of new Moixa Dashboard features to help our customers better understand their battery’s performance.
The new features include sections exposing more data on the battery’s behaviour. Customers – depending on the battery model they have – are now able to view their import and export tariff details, the battery’s upcoming charging plan and the charging instructions, as well as historical predictions for solar generation and household consumption. Check all the details in our blog post.

In November, alongside some further technical improvements on speed and usability of the Moixa Dashboard and App, we also released an additional feature that offers customers more control over their battery’s behaviour, allowing them to choose between different device operation modes (Balance, Scheduled, and Smart).

COP26: the Moixa team in Glasgow to support the move to a more sustainable world

Last November, the Moixa team also had a productive time attending COP26 in Glasgow, where nations gathered to agree on international plans for addressing the climate crisis. This year the role of the private sector has been critical. It was great to see vast numbers of corporates & SMEs turning up to be part of the conversation and discuss how to take practical action for the climate emergency and deliver on their targets.

We have also attended the Climate Action’s Sustainable Innovation Forum alongside COP26. Our founder Simon Daniel took the stage with Enel X and other industry leaders to discuss the importance of decarbonising our energy system and making it flexible, digital decentralised.

Watch our call for action to tackle climate change together.
