Why should I consider renewable energy for my home?

The current climate crisis is the greatest challenge facing our world today, and it is hard not to feel overwhelmed. But the good news is, by trying to reduce our own carbon footprint, we can all make a difference in the fight against global warming.

Making the switch to renewable energy sources to power your home is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, be more sustainable, and consequently lower your energy bills.

What’s more, the future of energy will increasingly depend on renewables, and by switching now you will support the transition to a smart and sustainable energy system.

What is renewable energy?

The term “renewable energy” refers to energy sources that are replenished in nature, such as the sun, wind, biomass and water. Their availability may depend on the time of day or year, and weather patterns.

Renewable energy is also often referred to as “green energy” and “clean energy” as the process of generating energy from these renewable sources emits no or hardly any greenhouse gases – unlike fossil fuels. Moving away from these polluting sources of energy is a key step in our efforts to fight climate change.

In recent years renewable energy is certainly booming. National Grid announced that for the first time, zero-carbon power generation outstripped fossil fuels in Britain in 2019, with 48.5% of the country’s power coming from zero-carbon sources, compared to 43% of Britain’s electricity generated from fossil fuels.

This important milestone is just the beginning: to achieve net-zero by 2050, we will require a big strategic shift away from fossil fuels and the creation of an energy landscape based on renewable and smart energy.
You can certainly join the fight and do your part: there are plenty of ways that you can implement renewable energy sources in your own home.

Considering purchasing air source heat pumps

An air-source heat pump is a renewable energy system that uses the heat from the outside air to provide you with heating and hot water.

This clean and environmentally-friendly source of heating is virtually silent when operating and you will also be able to considerably save on your heating bills while reducing your carbon footprint.

Taking advantage of wind energy

Wind turbines are most commonly found in big wind farms, but if you have enough space you can install a small wind turbine on your property to power your home.

In fact, smaller wind turbines are available for homes, either as a free-standing pole or installed on the building directly. They generate electricity by the wind turning the blades, which drives the internal turbine and creates power.

Wind turbines may be a great asset to your home thanks to the stability of wind power. A decent-sized wind turbine can easily generate most or all of your electricity needs, however, you may find that they are noisy and visually obtrusive.

Installing solar panels

Solar panels are the most common renewable source of energy. Known as photovoltaics (PV), solar panels capture the sun’s energy using photovoltaic cells.

The PV cells convert sunlight into electricity, which you can use for your household appliances and lighting. You can also heat your hot water with the sun’s energy using solar thermal systems.

Solar panels offer several advantages, such as the fact that nowadays the technology is easily available and the generation is silent.
Most importantly, solar energy is 100% green and doesn’t release any carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases.

Storing your self-generated solar energy

The solar panels will generate electricity for your home during daylight hours, but if you don’t use that energy as it is generated it is sent to the grid. Then when the sun goes down and solar panels stop generating electricity, you will once again rely on the grid for your energy needs.
To make the best use of your solar energy, installing a battery storage system is the next natural step.

By adding a smart battery to your solar panel installation, you can store the excess energy you generate instead of sending it back to the grid, so you can use solar energy to power your home both day and night. With smart energy storage, you can also store grid energy when you have a time-of-use tariff so you can power your home with the cleanest energy available all year round.

The future of energy

Renewable energy will play a fundamental role in achieving the UK’s energy and climate objectives. In order to create a future powered by renewables, smart technology is becoming increasingly important, with the combination of solar and energy storage technology being a key asset.

In fact, it will be innovative battery storage that will drive solar panels to become more powerful and efficient than ever before.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, solar and storage can be integrated within an interconnected energy ecosystem, where every consumer, source, and storage unit become active participants, unlocking the full potential of solar panels and generating the greenest energy.
